Dust Devil Skate Plaza, Phoenix Arizona

In association with Street League Skateboarding™ the Rob Dyrdek Foundation celebrated their contribution to the construction of the second Safe Spot Skate Spot in Phoenix, Ariz. at Dust Devil Park on July 11 at Phoenix City Hall. Rob Dyrdek and Councilman Daniel Valenzuela were on hand at a news conference to mark the relationship between the city and the Foundation, which is helping to bring a skate plaza to Dust Devil Park, located at 107th Avenue and Camelback. The 13-acre park currently is under construction and is scheduled for completion in fall of 2012.
Together, Street League Skateboarding™ and the Rob Dyrdek Foundation donated services valued at $50,000 to aid in the construction of the skate plaza. . The total construction cost of the skate park project is $200,000, the funds from which came from the Phoenix Parks and Preserve Initiative (PPPI). The skate plaza construction is part of a $5.3 million project, also funded by PPPI, to build Dust Devil Park. When opened, the new 13-acre park also will offer one basketball court, two parking lots, ramadas, a restroom building, security lighting, walkways, and landscaped open areas. Designed by California Skateparks, a world-renowned skate park design firm, the Dust Devil skate plaza boasts 9,000 square feet of meticulously designed, skateable terrain that incorporates the radial benches and features from the historical, first ever Street League Finals in 2010 at Thomas & Mack Center in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The Dust Devil skate plaza is the twelfth plaza constructed by the Rob Dyrdek Foundation’s “Safe Spot Skate Spot” program. Conceptualized by Rob Dyrdek in 2003, the “Safe Spot Skate Spot” program seeks to create safe and legal havens for skaters across the country, increase and encourage the active engagement of people in the sport of skateboarding, and to design and develop skate plazas in municipalities throughout the world. Additionally, the program provides an alternative option for communities with limited budgets or space restrictions to develop real street skateboarding locations. Last year the Rob Dyrdek Foundation, Street League Skateboarding and the City of Phoenix worked together to construct the world-class skate plaza at Cesar Chavez Park.
